Sometimes I forget how long I have been in Missouri. It's been almost 8 years now and while Florida is still my home, I have been able to witness some cool stuff. None cooler than my first ever guitar student, Connor Low. Connor was 9 years old when his mom first asked me to teach him how to play the guitar. I was working at a Starbucks, and Amber would come in daily and we'd chat. Once she learned I played, I took some time and gave him some lessons. There was a talent show approaching and he wanted to play a song. What song might you ask?
Not the most technically difficult song, but for a 9 year old?!?!?! Still, I didn't sweat it, much. After the first lesson it was pretty shaky, but by the time the second lesson rolled around I was floored. Connor's work ethic had moved him forward through the licks (even at 9 years old), and although not perfect, I could tell there was improvement. The next week, even more improvement, the week after that, he had jumped into the solos without any instruction. Connor turns ten...the talent show is at hand. I made a quick backing track for him, and he did the rest. This was then...
A few mistakes here and there, but COME ON! He was 10! Plus it was one of his FIRST times ever playing in public!
FAST FORWARD. Now Conner is a little older, a little wiser, but still has that same work ethic. He has become and incredible musician, far surpassing anything I could have ever taught him. He loves different styles and techniques and is continually improving himself. He has had some amazing opportunities, and played with some amazing musicians. One of which a couple of months ago was the illustrious Jazz musician Marcus Miller. Check this out and pick your jaw up off the floor.
It's been an honor and a pleasure to be around such talent and ambition. Connor has been one of my most favorite people here in Missouri, and although he is half my age, and 20x my talent, I definitely consider him a friend. Which is why on occasion we play some tunes together!
So, now my shameless plug to have you all come out and give a listen to us at the Barrel Bar in Dardenne Prairie from 7pm-11p on February 12th, 2016. Free show, great wine, spirits, and beer, and they even sell some mighty fine smokables. So come sing and dance with us in a nice relaxing atmosphere! If you won't come for me...then come for Connor, because holy SHIT, that kid can play!
